CLASS OVERVIEW

Move Pediatric Care Upstream: From Pregnancy Through the First Years

Dr. Magryta distills the epigenetic, metabolic, and immunologic literature into clinical decisions you can apply in your practice.

You will learn:

  • How maternal insulin resistance and nutrient insufficiency are linked to fetal brain development.
  • Why findings in the first month of life point back to pregnancy.
  • How to distinguish the asthma endotypes that respond to inhaled steroids from the one that often resists them.
  • Why eczema in the first year of life is linked to nearly four times the odds of food allergy.

The course draws on published research and Dr. Magryta's pediatric clinical experience since 1999.

Pediatric Medical Training Starts After the Damage

Medical training teaches you to recognize pediatric disease once symptoms appear. Asthma gets inhaled steroids, eczema gets emollients, and autism gets a therapy referral.

None of that explains why these conditions are more common in children now than they were a generation ago.

Dr. Magryta argues the answer lies upstream, in pregnancy and the first years of life.

Maternal insulin resistance, nutrient insufficiency, chronic stress, dysbiosis, and toxin exposure converge on one shared pathway: chronic low-grade inflammation.

That inflammation reaches the fetus through the placenta. It shapes the infant's inflammatory set point, early microbial colonization, and barrier function long before symptoms appear.

This course focuses on the levers that remain modifiable at each stage: preconception, pregnancy, delivery, and the first months of life, including feeding and environmental exposures.

The cost of waiting shows up in children who arrive already sensitized and inflamed, on a trajectory that is harder to redirect.

Did You Know...

Autism diagnoses increased from an estimated 1 in 5,000 children in 1970 to 1 in 31 today.
Duke data: half of the children later diagnosed with autism showed signs by 30 days of age.
Oxygen pressure in a normal placenta is 30–35 mmHg. Everest's summit is 52 mmHg.
Almost 90% of US women may lack enough B. infantis to break down milk sugars.
Animals exposed to Amish house dust developed no asthma. Those given Hutterite dust did.
Antibiotics in the first month of life: about four times the odds of food allergy.

Pediatric Health from the Womb and Beyond taught by Chris Magryta, MD

Why are we seeing more disease in children, and what changed upstream? Dr. Magryta has spent his career working backward from that question.

This course organizes his findings into a clinical framework you can apply in your practice.

It starts with evidence that early influences shape neurodevelopmental outcomes rather than fixing them from the outset.

It then explores maternal insulin resistance, nutrient sufficiency, stress, sleep, toxins, and the microbiome.

These concepts are applied to two conditions commonly seen in pediatric practice: asthma and atopic dermatitis.

You will learn to distinguish asthma endotypes, identify relevant clinical markers, and explore the interventions that reduced disease severity in his own patients. Later modules walk through real pediatric cases, including the labs he ordered and how each child responded.

Chris Magryta, MD, has practiced pediatrics since 1999. He presents the published research behind each recommendation, including early data from an obstetric nutrition project with a planned 500-pregnancy study.
COURSE FEATURES

What Changes in Your Practice on Monday

Six shifts in how you assess pediatric patients

1

Preconception Metabolic Assessment

Assess maternal insulin resistance and nutrient status before conception, the greatest modifiable lever for reducing neurodevelopmental risk.

2

Glucose Tolerance Reinterpreted

Understand why failing a one-hour glucose test but passing the three-hour test still warrants closer attention to blood sugar management.

3

Nutrient Sufficiency Versus Deficiency

Identify which maternal cofactors to assess when RDA-based benchmarks overlook insufficiencies that affect fetal brain development.

4

Early Infant Findings in Context

Recognize which findings in the first month of life appeared in children later diagnosed with autism and why they point back to pregnancy.

5

Asthma Endotype Decisions

Distinguish asthma types that respond to inhaled steroids from the one that often resists them, and adjust treatment before the next flare.

6

Eczema Beyond the Steroid Cream

Address the barrier, microbial, nutrient, and stress factors behind atopic dermatitis, with particular attention to its link to food allergy.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Chris Magryta, MD, is a husband, father, pediatrician, writer, podcaster, and onion peeler who peels back the layers on why our species has become disease-prone. He has practiced medicine at Salisbury Pediatric Associates in Salisbury, North Carolina, for 24 years and sees each child as an incubator of change for human health.

He formed a clinically integrated network called Children First of North Carolina and guides a new, data-driven, prevention-focused Medicaid delivery model for North Carolina children. The company currently employs in-office social workers, care managers, nutritionists, and soon-to-be therapists to help children at high risk from social determinants navigate a healthier path.

His passion for changing a child's health trajectory has never been stronger, and he brings the business side of medicine together with the science of whole-child health.

Dr. Magryta completed medical school and pediatric residency at Emory University and the University of Virginia. In 2008, he received a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona's Center for Integrative Medicine. He also completed deep dives into the curricula of the Institute for Functional Medicine and Cogence Immunology.
